IATA Launches New SeMS Certification to Boost Airline and Airport Security

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has launched the Security Management System (SeMS) Certification Program to enhance aviation security. Open to airlines, airports, cargo handlers, and other aviation stakeholders, the program emphasizes proactive risk identification and mitigation, moving beyond compliance-based approaches.

SeMS provides a structured framework for managing security risks, supported by IATA, ICAO, and global regulators. Certification features a tiered maturity model, ranging from foundational implementation (Level 1) to advanced security management practices (Level 3). Organizations like Japan Airlines and Brisbane Airport contributed to developing the framework.

Key initiatives include self-assessment tools, a SeMS knowledge-sharing community, and expanded requirements for IOSA-registered airlines by 2025, fostering continuous improvement and risk-based security management across the aviation supply chain.
